Rick's Reviews

I am not a professional music critic or reviewer. I'm just one guy who loves music of all kinds. I lean more toward rock and away from country. I never liked the rap/hip hop genre. However, as a musician, I can relate on other levels. I absolutely respect the rap artist's ability to rhyme on the fly and make it fit with any beat. That is a legitimate talent no matter what anyone thinks.

As far as country goes, I have to admit, I got my first real start playing music in a country band. I was 16 at the time. I had guys carry my equipment and got paid for playing some of the easiest stuff on the planet. I thought I was a stud. I'm a lot older now and I'm still not a stud. My true love is rock music. I feel I can express myself best through different styles of rock.

This short preamble was not just some self serving babble. My intent was to establish that I'm not extremely well versed in all kinds of music. But I know what I like and I'll tell you what I think about a particular band or song. So, no matter what I may write, just remember…

This is just one guy's opinion.

The Unlikely

Beginning August 1, 2009 "The Unlikely For The Unusual" (TUFTU) will just be "The Unlikely". I like it. It's simple. Simple is good.

I like the band name. "Unlikely" is the way God seems to like it. The Bible is full of "Unlikely" stories. Remember the story where God pared down Gideon's army to only 300 men and did the "Unlikley" thing by defeating an army that overwhelmingly outnumbered them. Yeah, that's my God.

Jesus said some "Unlikely" things like:

"For whosoever will save his life shall lose it: and whosoever will lose his life for my sake shall find it."
Matthew 16:25

Enough about the name. The Unlikely is a talented crew that, if given the right chance with the right promotion, could become a great band signed by a major label. Their collective hearts appear to be in the right place to be used in a mighty way by God. They seem to have it all: good material AND good intentions.

The 7 song EP is very well crafted. This is not some 2 bit garage band. There is true feeling put into these songs. Each has the proper build of story and music to keep you hooked through each track. There is a good mix of up tempo songs as well as slower. I especially like how tight the instruments work together. This is EP would make a great addition to anyone's collection… Christian or not.
